SnapDistance is a Progressive Web App (PWA) — a modern web technology that lets you install websites as native-feeling apps on your device. Unlike traditional apps from the App Store or Google Play, PWAs install directly from your browser in seconds, use minimal storage, and update automatically.

PWAs combine the best of web and native apps: they work offline, load instantly, and run in full-screen mode without browser toolbars. SnapDistance caches its core distance calculation engine, map tiles, and geocoding data so you can calculate distances even without an internet connection — perfect for travel planning in areas with limited connectivity.

When you install SnapDistance, a service worker caches all essential assets: the calculation engine, UI components, and recently viewed map tiles. The Haversine formula runs entirely in your browser — no server requests needed for distance calculations.

Geocoding (city search) requires an internet connection for the initial lookup, but previously searched locations are cached locally for up to 7 days. Map tiles you've already viewed are cached for 30 days. This means if you've searched for "London to Paris" before, that calculation and those map tiles will work offline.

These caches live only in your own browser's storage (the service worker's CacheStorage), never on a SnapDistance server. Nothing about your searches is uploaded, logged or linked to you — clearing your browser data or uninstalling the app removes the cache entirely, which is why this is fully consistent with our "we don't store your searches" policy.

Most distance calculator apps in app stores require downloading 50–200 MB, need periodic manual updates, and often display ads. SnapDistance installs in under 5 seconds, takes minimal storage (under 5 MB for the core app), and updates automatically when you're online.

SnapDistance provides instant results in kilometers, miles, and nautical miles with estimated driving and flight times. The interactive map lets you click anywhere to measure distances visually, and the compare tool evaluates two routes side by side.
