How Distance Calculations Work

Great-Circle Distance

We use the Haversine formula to calculate the shortest path between two points on Earth's curved surface — the same method used in aviation.

Driving Estimates

Driving distances are estimated at approximately 1.3× the straight-line distance to account for road routing, with an average speed of 80 km/h.

Flight Times

Flight times assume a cruising speed of 800 km/h plus 30 minutes for takeoff and landing procedures. Actual times vary by aircraft and route.

People Also Ask

+
How accurate are the distances on SnapDistance?
All distances are calculated using the Haversine formula with WGS84 Earth radius parameters. This gives the great-circle (shortest) distance between two points and is accurate to within 0.5% of actual distances. For driving distances, we apply a 1.3× multiplier to approximate real road routing.
+
What is the difference between air distance and driving distance?
Air distance (great-circle distance) is the shortest path between two points on Earth's surface. Driving distance is typically 20-40% longer because roads follow terrain, avoid obstacles, and connect through highway networks. For example, London to Paris is 344 km by air but approximately 450 km by road.
+
How many cities does SnapDistance cover?
SnapDistance currently covers 267+ cities across 6 continents, with 982+ pre-calculated routes. We have detailed hub pages for 134 major world cities, each showing distances to dozens of destinations.
+
Can I use SnapDistance for trip planning?
